The crisis of Western democracies: has liberalism run its course?
Over the last decade, we have witnessed a growing disillusionment towards institutions and politics. The result has been an increasing discontent within our society that has led to the age of populism. When – on top of that – we add economic crises, the pandemic shock and the outbreak of wars never this close to our borders, it becomes really hard to understand whether our socioeconomic system can still be relevant in the present time. So, what is the state of health of our liberal democracies in such a context of growing uncertainty and identity crisis? How could our institutions change and adapt to meet the needs of citizens?
The purpose of this meeting is to offer the participants a chance to reflect on the crisis of the liberal system within our democracies, especially considering the new challenges posed by the acceleration of the technological progress. In order to do so, they will be able to engage in a discussion with Michele Boldrin, globally renowned economist and an absolute protagonist in the intellectual debate more broadly intended.
More precisely, the focus will be on:
Professore di Economia, Washington University in Saint Louis; Condirettore del Center for Dynamic Economics.
